BlackFinn: A close, local stand-by

Since my foot surgery, my culinary adventures have been clipped, just like my wings.  Yesterday was the first day I felt up for venturing out for dinner.  Because of the gross and cumbersome crutches I’m on, I played it safe and decided to stay close to home.

Fortunately, the area I live in is a tiny little city in itself, complete with trendy new apartment and condo buildings that brought along an assortment of restaurants and fun places to sip, eat, and lounge.  My go-to is a place called BlackFinn. It’s a chain and the first one I ever went to was in D.C. near the White House. I normally don’t go for chains, but there are only a couple in the area.  I like the vibe for when I want to stay close to home, and aren’t up for the hustle and bustle, but want to get out.  The atmosphere there did a bustling lunch service to professionals, Hill staffers, and the like.  The one near me is located on the ground floor of a new apartment/condo building, so it’s much more low-key, and is a go-to for the young professionals that inhabit the apartments.  It’s got a great wrap around patio that’s perfect for grabbing some drinks and apps after a long day or for lounging on a Saturday afternoon.  My favorite thing about this place though, other than the food, is that a lot of the residents of the area are dog owners, so sitting on the patio gives me prime access to pet all of the dogs passing by.

Last night,  I indulged in the 12-hour pork mac-n-cheese.  It’s not my usual; I normally opt for the grilled chicken tenders with Finn fries, but after subsisting on take-out and bland foods, I was ready for something hearty.  The pulled pork was yummy; a little salty but the flavor of the barbeque also came through.  The cheese blend used for the pasta was a little bland, but I think that may actually work since the pork has so much flavor.  I didn’t regret getting it though, and the portion was perfect for how rich it was.

It was exactly what I needed to transition me into venturing out – low key, hearty food, and close to home for when I magically got extremely tired at 8 p.m. and needed to go to bed!
